Can’t Let it Go: Sea Lions, Doggs and the Murdaughs. (oh my!)

Our version of “Can’t Let it Go” is back, with a trio of things our team can’t stop talking about this week.

Sea Lions Ocean Mapping

Nikki : Something that both fascinates and terrifies me is just how little we know about our oceans. Beyond a certain threshold, we really don’t know what the bottom looks like, or what treasures exist below what mankind and traditional machinery can access. Scientists have long tried ocean mapping, but limitations persist. Insert Daphne, Phoebe, Iris and Pasithea. These unlikely assistants are sea lions, equipped with cameras, heading on dives more than 300 feet. Not only did the animals deliver detailed footage of at-risk reefs, but gave us new looks on how these animals behave in the wild. The video footage is a worthy feel-good watch.

Snoop Dogg in Paris

Nikki & Jason: Y’all know by now that we’re obsessed with the Olympics. What you may or may not know, is that we’re equally as obsessed with Snoop Dogg in Paris. The man is living his best life – carrying the Olympic Torch, swimming with Michael Phelps, dressage with Martha Stewart, and a wardrobe featuring Olympic GOATs. We loved this article from the Wall Street Journal, and were really envious of Jason Gay living out our dream of a late night with Snoop in Paris.

The Murdaughs are Back

Jason: My can’t let it go really hasn’t even been officially published yet. Let’s be honest, even if we pledged that we didn’t care, the disaster that was the tragic Murdaugh family collapse gripped us all for months. For more than a year, true crime nerds swooned, political geeks were riveted, and corporate defense attorneys stifled giggles as revelation after revelation broke through the news and toppled one of the most aggressive plaintiffs attorney firms in the state.

Well, my friend Valerie Bauerlein’s book is finally at hand. She was well-known in SC when she was at The State newspaper before she moved to the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ has her essay about the Murdaughs in the paper this weekend. She spent more than a year at the trials and digging through the family’s dirt before publishing a 100-year tell-all about the rise and fall of one of SC’s (now) most notorious families. Despite my cynicism about the whole thing, I can’t let it go.
